Shirana Shahbazi

Shirana Shabazi (*1974) may be known for her very precise hand, but her intervention in the Museum Rietberg’s African collection is likely to prove perplexing at first. Her “holiday snapshots” inside the vitrines along the wall generate a strange flickering effect, which does not subside until the eyes, and indeed all the senses, have adjusted and are ready for closer scrutiny. Only then can we appreciate her incisive inquiry into how we approach “exotic African art.”
